What is an SMSF?

A quick, plain-English guide to Self-Managed Super Funds, and how one could work for you.

The Basics

Your super, run by you for you

A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is a private superannuation fund that you manage yourself, giving you direct say over how your retirement savings are invested, within the rules set by the ATO.

Unlike a retail or industry fund, an SMSF puts you in the driver’s seat. You can invest in shares, term deposits, commercial property and more, and pool your super with up to five other members to share costs.

  • Up to 6 members per fund
  • Full control over your investment strategy
  • Concessional 15% tax rate on earnings
  • Flexibility to invest in assets like property
  • You carry the compliance responsibility as trustee
